This is so fantastic, the photos just can't capture the massive size of this
building. Construction covered a period that covered over 6 centuries, & began
on 8 September 1296 by Arnolfo di Cambio, whom was the original designer. The
final part of the construction was in 1886 when the facade was completed. The
tower started in 1334 & was completed in 1359. The inlaid marble used in this,
is a "must see". Inside the sealing of the dome is completely painted with many
scenes.

This was our first view of the Duomo as we walked from the rail station.

This is to big for 1 photo, so I had to take 2 photos. Giotto's Bell Tower is
seen to the right. This tower is 84,7 metres or about 278 feet in height, and
has 414 steps. We were warned that we should be in good health prior to
attempting the climb.

Close up of the round window.

The doors alone are huge! This is so massive, you just have to see it in person.

The center statue under the round window.

One of the other statues on the front. Notice the inlaid marble on the facade.

Doors to Paradise
These took 27 years to complete from 1425-1452. Made by sculptor and goldsmith
Lorenzo Ghiberti, of gilded bronze. These are hung on the east side of the
Battistero di San Giovanni.

The Campanile di Giotto
This bell is on display in the tower. (no longer hanging at the top of the
